I do think that a lot of the hype for the remake was nostalgia, and I can see why someone who didn't play the original might not like it as much. I want to love the game, but the game keeps getting in the way.ĭisclaimer- Shadow of the Colossus is my favourite game, and I had the remake on preorder pretty much as soon as it was available. It's feeling like a chore.ĭon't get me wrong - clinging on while a Colossus shook you was pretty fun at first, but it's certainly not enough to entertain me 16 times in a row. If I fall off, I repeat the exact same process again. When I finally get to a Colossus, I get a rush of excitement, followed by a period of tedious frustration as I patiently hold on while getting in the occasional stab. I've heard other games (usually incorrectly) criticized as "walking simulators", but in-between Colossi I can only describe the game as a horse-riding simulator, and one with bad controls. So much of the game is tedious, and frankly, boring at times. but that art seems so damn hard to reach. I can see how the player is meant to feel sorry for each slain foe, how the emptiness of the world is supposed to resonate with the player. The atmosphere is fantastic, the music is perfect, and it's given me some real feelings of excitement.
